Where's Almo?

Recently, Mike and I took a little ride through the great state of Idaho. We started at the top and went straight through to the bottom! We saw some amazing stuff!

One of our stops was a little town called Almo. The City of Rocks and Castle Rock State Park is nearby, and I wanted to photograph the area. Almo was established around a post office in 1881.

The Oregon Trail passes through Almo before Almo was even established. The history of the area is incredible. You can still see the cabins everywhere from the early settlers. The official population if you check online is 212. According to one lady I talked to she counted 90 that live right in town.

Besides the park there isn’t much to the town. A restaurant, a hotel, a general store and a post office (inside the general store).

The original store sign. It was found buried in a barn. It now hangs on the original log cabin wall in the store.

Mike wanted a milk shake and we had heard that they will make you one at the general store. Mike hit the jackpot. He is a sucker for huckleberry shakes. Since huckleberries are the state fruit you find huckleberry ice cream everywhere in Idaho! So, we are sitting there waiting for our shakes and the lady making them started telling us about the history of the area. I was in heaven! She explained about the pioneers and how they settled the area. She told us about the founding families. About that time a little girl came in to buy a soda. After she left we were told she was one of the descendants of the first pioneers in the area.

The whole store was full of antiques. I felt like I stepped back in time when I saw the candy case! The post office is also inside the store.

Turns out the little kitchen in the store served breakfast so Mike and I made sure to show up the next morning. This time the husband was there. I feel so bad because I never got the names of the two of them. He was just as intriguing as his wife. He was there because that day was cookie day and it was his job, after she made the cookie dough, to form the cookies and put them on the cookie sheets for her. She said her hands couldn’t take it! I was so touched by the way that he took care of her. One of my favorite shots is the one I caught of him doing the cookies with the natural light coming in the window.

Our waffle breakfast was amazing! Homemade waffles with homemade strawberry/peach jam and all the fresh milk you could drink. How could you go wrong? All of this for only $8. Mike tried to give her more, but she wouldn’t take it, so he left a huge tip.

If ever in the Almo area be sure to stop by the general store and say hi!
